Why Dubai is an Ecommerce Hub
Dubai’s evolution from a regional trading post to a global logistics and innovation powerhouse has been nothing short of remarkable. Today, it is a magnet for international businesses, especially for those in the e-commerce sector.
Here’s why global entrepreneurs choose to create online stores in Dubai:
- 0 personal income tax, 100% foreign ownership
- The city’s strategic location, at the crossroads of East and West, with access to 3 billion consumers within an 8-hour flight
- Cell phone penetration in the Middle East is extremely high, especially in the GCC, with smartphone penetration often exceeding 90-97% in key markets like the UAE. Seamless access to global trade routes through major logistics hubs like Jebel Ali Port and Dubai International Airport
- Consumers are tech-savvy, mobile-first, and increasingly comfortable with cross-border purchases
- Government initiatives like the Dubai Economic Agenda D33; a 10-year strategy launched to double Dubai’s economy by 2033.
With these advantages, entrepreneurs are well-positioned to succeed here. Let’s walk through the steps to set up your online store in Dubai.
Step-by-Step Online Store Setup in Dubai
When starting an online store in Dubai, getting an e-commerce license is your first step. At IFZA, this process is simple, giving entrepreneurs a clear path to launch their digital business. The process is identical for both individual and corporate shareholders; however, the supporting documents vary.
1. Consultation and Proposal
Our process begins with a consultation to establish the licensee’s requirements, followed by a tailored proposal outlining the best type of license, business activities, visa package and office solutions.
2. Documentation
Next, we’ll require a set of documents, including the license application form (including UBO), passport copy, digital passport photo, Emirates ID, and visa copy for UAE residents.
3. Processing
Once the documents are received, our support team will register your shareholders’ documents on the registration portal. Once approved, the Authority will issue two E-legal forms for signing prior to the issuance of incorporation documents.
4. License Approval
The Authority approves the application.
5. MOA/AOA Process
A digital Memorandum of Agreement/Articles of Association will be sent to all shareholders for e-signatures.
6. License Issuance
A soft copy is sent via email, with the original license available for collection from our office upon request.
With your license in place, you’re ready for the next phase: establishing your online presence and determining the best approach for your store.
Choose the Right Store Model
When setting up an online store, it’s important to choose the right store model for scalability and profitability. Here are common models to consider:
- Marketplace: A platform-style model like Noon and Amazon that enables third-party vendors.
- Dropshipping: No inventory involved. The third party is responsible for handling warehousing and shipping.
- B2C (Business-to-Consumer): This includes retail direct-to-consumer sales.
- B2B (Business-to-Business): Wholesale or trade sales to businesses.
- Digital Products / Services: This includes intangible offerings such as E-learning, SaaS or consultancy.
Payment Gateways
Once you’ve decided on your store model, the next step is selecting a payment gateway. For startups and SMEs in the UAE, in fast-moving sectors like e-commerce, partnering with the right payment gateway means fewer cart abandonments, better cash flow, and high customer trust. While there are plenty of options, not all are built the same. Some of the available services in the region include:
- Telr
- PayTabs
- Checkout.com
- Amazon Payment Services
- CashU
- CCAvenue,
- Stripe
- PayPal
- Noon Payments
